Interprofessional Education (IPE) Day 2025 - Cases

Case 2

Patient
Mr. Jamal Green, 58-year-old male

Clinical Scenario

Mr. Green suffered a stroke and has significant physical impairments. He is alert and capable of making decisions. He expresses a desire to go home, even though he will need substantial support. His adult children insist on placing him in a long-term care facility, arguing he won’t be safe at home.

Ethical Dilemma

How should the team navigate conflicting wishes between a competent patient and his family?

Discussion Questions

  1. What ethical principles are involved when a patient’s decision contradicts the family’s wishes?
  2. Are there compromises or support systems that could satisfy both parties from the perspective of each profession?
