  Case 2

Clinical Vignette

It’s been a long day of classes and schoolwork and you are scrolling on your favorite social media platform. You come across some posts on a mental illness, suicide prevention forum from a social media group in which one of your classmates is providing medical advice and answering questions posed by the group.  As you read the posts and comments, your classmate comes off as practicing medical professional vs as a health professions student. The members of the group praise your classmate for helping to answer their questions.

Discussion Questions

  1. What are the pros and cons of monitoring online posts by individuals with medical/psychiatric illness and risk factors for suicide?
  2. What ethical and legal considerations come into play in these scenarios?
