  Case 4

Clinical Vignette

During lab in the second year of professional school, you note that your laboratory partner has been exhibiting some unusual behavior over the last 2 months. He has been missing quite a few classes and labs, even the ones that are mandatory; previously, he had attended all lectures and labs, even the ones that were optional. You note that he is irritable, appears tired, and that the quality of his work has dramatically deteriorated. You have asked him twice if there was a problem and whether there is a reason for his absences. Upon questioning, he became even more irritable and defensive. Today, your laboratory partner arrives late again. His hair is uncombed, and his shirt is wrinkled and stained. You notice when he opens his book bag that there some unlabeled vials of pills.
